The Story Behind the Lens
As a teaching staff member with the Golden Buffalo Marching Band 117, I have unique access to capture the behind-the-scenes energy and dedication that goes into every performance. This ongoing project focuses on documentary-style photography that puts viewers right in the action, showing both the spectacular performances and the human moments that make this ensemble special. Using a compact Olympus E-PM2 with a fast 25mm lens, I'm able to move through rehearsals and performances to capture authentic moments of concentration, celebration, and camaraderie.

Technical Details
Camera Settings & Technique
The Olympus E-PM2's compact size allows me to move freely during rehearsals without disrupting the educational process. The Panasonic 25mm f/1.7 lens provides excellent low-light performance for indoor rehearsals and evening games, while the 50mm equivalent focal length is perfect for capturing both individual expressions and small group dynamics. Fast autofocus is essential for catching spontaneous moments of joy and concentration.
Equipment Used
- Olympus E-PM2 Mirrorless Camera
- Panasonic 25mm f/1.7 ASPH Lens
- Peak Design Cuff and Leash
- Raw Therapee for Post-Processing
Post-Processing
Post-processing focuses on enhancing the natural energy and atmosphere. I emphasize contrast to make the gold and black uniforms pop, while carefully balancing shadows and highlights to preserve detail in both the bright stadium lights and darker rehearsal spaces. Color grading enhances the warm tones of the brass instruments and the iconic Colorado gold.
Lessons & Insights
Working as both an educator and photographer has taught me the importance of reading the room - knowing when to capture and when to step back. The compact gear allows me to be unobtrusive during teaching moments while still being ready for those spontaneous expressions of musical excellence. The fast lens has been crucial for maintaining sharp images in the challenging lighting conditions of both indoor rehearsals and evening stadium performances.
